During WW1, German soldiers were referred to as the 'boche' by the French. The word is derived from the French word 'caboche' meaning 'cabbage' and ia reference to the shape of the 'typical' German head. That is the French equivalent of "Kraut" which means &qugc;tabbaoe" in German. It's also short for sauerkraut.
